The Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy recently held its inaugural Data Science Workshop in the School of Public Health at the University of the Western Cape on 12-13 April 2016. The workshop brought together the IDIA partner institutions (University of Pretoria, North West University, University of the Western Cape and the University of Cape Town), astronomical and computing institutions (SAAO, SKA-SA and the CHPC) and partners from industry (IBM, SAC, SAP, SAS and Tracker...
Many galaxies host supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at their centres, which are often characterized by bright jets of ionised material being accelerated along powerful jets. Researchers at UCT and UWC have discovered that the jets emanating from galaxies in a specific area of the universe are aligned - possibly due to mass fluctuations that were produced in the primordial universe. These jets are often much larger in extent than the host galaxy itself - which are studied in detail by radio...

Researchers from SAP and IDIA held a two-day workshop at the SAP offices in Century City. The workshop included astronomy-related talks from IDIA researchers, and technology related presentations from SAP researchers. In addition to the South African participants, several SAP researchers attended the meeting virtually from their Idea Lab in Heidelberg, Germany. The first-day focused on presentations and discussions related to information gathering. IDIA researchers presented talks that outlined...
The University of Pretoria (UP) joins the University of Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape and the North-West University in the collaborative agreement to form IDIA. Professor Stephanie Burton, the Vice-Principle of the University of Pretoria, signed the agreement on 4 February 2016, which pledges the necessary financial contribution, and which enables UP researchers to collaborate and lead projects under the IDIA umbrella. Scientists at UP bring specialised expertise into IDIA -...

IDIA and the NRAO have signed a MoU to collaborate on the development of algorithms and software for the processing of radio data, in anticipation of the large surveys that will be conducted by the MeerKAT and the Jansky VLA. MeerKAT and the JVLA are precursors of the SKA, and the large surveys that will be done with these telescopes will pave the way to the science observations that the SKA will conduct. These large surveys include pilot observations with the VLA and early science observations...
On 17 November 2015, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between IDIA (South Africa) and the Dutch partners - ASTRON and IBM-Dome. The Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, attended the signing of the MoU as part of a visit by the Dutch trade delegation to South Africa, which comprised representatives from 75 companies. The MoU supports an agreement to collaborate on the development of the Precursor Regional Science Data Centres (RSDCs) for the SKA. RSDCs will be an essential part of the...
