Postgraduate Studies

Minimum entry requirement for postgraduate studies is a good BSc degree in Physics, Mathematics, Astronomy or Engineering. Typically students will pursue a BSc Honours, Masters of Science and PhD degrees in Astronomy.

Most postgraduate students embark on the National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme (NASSP). The NASSP programme is a national programme for students to pursue their BSc Honours, Masters of Science and PhD degrees in Astronomy in the Western Cape, North West and Kwa-Zulu Natal provinces.

After getting a PhD, astronomers usually spend three to six years in one or more postdoctoral positions in universities or research institutions as postdoctoral researchers and fellows.

Postgraduate Opportunities

The Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy offers opportunities to postgraduate students. Click here to find out more about these opportunities.
