SUPERMIGHTEE is a collaboration between the MeerKAT MIGHTEE project and colleagues at NCRA-TIFR in India to co-observe the MIGHTEE deep fields with the upgraded GMRT from 250-850 MHz. With interferometer baselines almost four times larger than MeerKAT, the uGMRT offers similar angular resolution and sensitivity at 400 and 700 MHz as MeerKAT at L and S band. The combined MeerKAT-uGMRT data set will thus provide full-Stokes information on the microJy source population over an extremely broad band, from 250 MHz to 2.5 GHz, at resolution of a few arcseconds.  This unprecedented data set will have a profound impact on our understanding of how AGN and star-forming galaxies evolve over cosmic time, as functions of stellar mass and environment; how the Universe’s neutral hydrogen evolves, turns into stars after moving through the molecular phase, and/or fuels AGN activity; and how cosmic magnetic fields originate and evolve in clusters, filaments and galaxies.

This joint project, called superMIGHTEE, evolved from a series of joint workshops sponsored by an Indian DST and South African NRF bilateral Indo-South African Flagship program in Astronomy. The next workshop in this series will take place at Kruger National Park from 05 – 07 June 2019.

Topics to be covered at the workshop include:

  • Update on observations and data from uGMRT and MeerKAT
  • Data processing and technical challenges for high dynamic range imaging and joint analysis of data from uGMRT and MeerKAT over the entire band
  • New Machine Learning, analytics algorithms and Visualization Techniques
  • Joint scientific projects with the data
  • Project planning and development.

Should you have any queries regarding the conference kindly e-mail  Nicky Walker at admin@idia.ac.za.

The workshop will be held at the Protea Hotel, Marriot, Kruger Gate, Skukuza Kruger National Park.   From the funds we have available from the bilateral grant we are able to pay conference fees for all participants.  This covers all meals from 04 – 07 June 2019, including the gala dinner on the 06th, and the use of the conference facilities.  We are also able to cover the costs of accommodation for all student participants (based on two students per room).
